Sensei Doug Rouessart

Sensei Doug Rouessart started Karate in 1976 and has dedicated his life to the practice and study of the Art. Sensei attained Shodan in August 1981 with the Japan Karate Association (“JKA”) in Durban, South Africa. His Instructor was Sensei Toi Marot a student of world renowned Sensei Stan Schmidt.

In 1979 Sensei Doug emigrated to Australia and joined SKIA (then SKAA) at the South Sydney Dojo the instructor at the time being Sensei Frank Novak the founder of SKAA. All gradings since then have been attained under the examination of Kancho Kanazawa, 10th Dan and Chief Instructor of Shotokan Karate International Federation (“SKIF”) with its headquarters in Tokyo, Japan.

Sensei Doug is now a full time instructor being the first member in SKIA to go professional. Sensei has a full time Dojo and fitness studio in Castle Hill that offers Karate, Self Defence, Group Fitness and Personal Training to all ages. He is also a National Instructor and has traveled around Australia to teach at seminars and training camps to share his knowledge.

In Sensei’s competition career that spanned some 20 years he competed at State, National and International levels winning numerous titles in Kata & Kumite (individual & team events). He was selected four times on the Australian SKIA Team to compete at World Cups overseas and was Team Captain in Milano, Italy 1997 being his last before retiring from competition to focus on Coaching and developing Karate-do in Australia. This included election to Chairman of the Technical and Development Committee for SKIA the prime responsibility being the improvement in the standard of Karate throughout Australia. Sensei was then selected as National Head Coach to lead the Australian Teams to the World Cup in Durban, South Africa 2003 and Tokyo, Japan 2006. Both teams have returned with Gold, silver and bronze and Sensei Doug aims to build on this success as he has been re-elected as the National Head Coach for the World Cup in Greece 2009.
